What to say to someone with cancer
Written By Lotte May

Cancer is a difficult and emotional journey for those diagnosed and their loved ones. It can be hard to know what to say or do when someone you care about is going through this experience. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, there are certain things that cancer patients truly want to hear. In this blog, we’ll explore how you can provide support that actually makes a difference.
The Gift of Understanding: Sometimes, the best way to show you care is through a practical gesture. Our Ultimate Chemo Kit takes the guesswork out of support. It includes our Conquer Cancer Guidebook, which features a dedicated section for caregivers on how to navigate difficult conversations and provide the best possible support during treatment.
What Do Cancer Patients Want to Hear?
1. "I’m Here for You"
One of the most important things a patient needs to know is that they are not alone. Offer your support in concrete ways—provide rides to appointments, help with specific errands, or simply be a listening ear. Consistency is key; showing up when things get tough is what matters most.
2. "You Don’t Have To Do This Alone"
Cancer can be incredibly isolating. Encourage your loved one to reach out for help from professional resources, such as counselling or local UK support groups. Remind them that accepting help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
3. "It’s Okay To Not Be Okay"
There is often a pressure to stay positive, but cancer patients need space to express fear, anger, or sadness without judgement. Validating their feelings gives them the freedom to process their journey in a healthy, honest way.
4. "You Are Stronger Than You Think"
Remind your loved one of their resilience. Encourage positive self-talk by highlighting all the hurdles they have already overcome. This boost in confidence can be vital as they continue toward recovery.
