Lymphoedema & Skincare

What is Lymphoedema and How it Impacts the Skin

The lymphatic system plays a vital role in how the body functions. It acts as a waste disposal unit, draining away fluid, proteins, and waste matter from the tissues. It also forms a key part of your immune system, defending the body against infection.

When the lymphatic system is damaged, fluid cannot reach the lymph nodes to be filtered and cleaned. This is why an affected limb is significantly more vulnerable to infections. Any injury or break in the skin can cause further damage to the lymphatic system in that area. Keeping your skin healthy, unbroken, and well-moisturised is your first line of defence.

Take the Guesswork Out of Skincare: Designed to meet the specific requirements for compromised skin, our Essential Skincare Set avoids the harsh perfumes that dry out the skin. It focuses on barrier repair and gentle cleansing to remove bacteria without stripping your skin’s natural protective oils.

Infections & Lymphoedema: How to Keep Yourself Safe

  • Daily Maintenance: Keep your skin clean, dry, and moisturised every single day. Avoid perfumed lotions which can cause dryness.
  • First Aid: Clean cuts or grazes immediately with antiseptic and cover them.
  • Environmental Protection: Use high-factor sunscreen and insect repellent (at least 50% DEET) to prevent skin breaks.
  • Temperature Control: Avoid hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms, as heat can increase swelling.
  • Physical Care: Do not wear tight clothing or jewellery, and avoid having injections or blood pressure checks on the affected arm.

Lymphoedema & Cellulitis

The most common infection associated with lymphoedema is cellulitis—a sudden, non-contagious bacterial infection of the deep skin layers. Because the lymphatic system is not "patrolling" the area effectively, cellulitis can escalate quickly.

Symptoms of Cellulitis (Contact your doctor immediately):

  • Redness and a feeling of intense heat in the skin.
  • Pain and increased swelling in the affected area.
  • A high temperature or chills (flu-like symptoms).

Prompt treatment is essential to prevent permanent skin changes and further damage to the remaining lymph drainage routes.
