Self Care
Why is self care important?
We are all less able to handle the stresses that come our way when we're depleted by physical and emotional exhaustion. But we are more resilient and more able to handle life's stress when we are feeling our best both physically and emotionally. This is why self care is so important in everyday life but especially during cancer and recovery.
Self care can reduce side effects
Cancer has a huge impact on mental health not just your physical health. The best thing about self care is that it doesn’t have to involve a huge amount of time, but the benefits on your mental health can be improved drastically. Taking care of yourself will help reduce some of the side effects treatment brings. Chemo brain and nausea can become worse from being stressed and anxious.
Looking after yourself will make you feel better, and the better you feel, the better you will be in all areas of your life. Self care doesn’t have to involve a huge time commitment and it doesn’t have to cost the earth.
Furthermore, self care is the behaviours you do to take care of your own health, and it can include hygiene, nutrition, leisure activities, sports, exercise, seeking professional healthcare services when needed, and much more.
